'Relentless Search for Food in Winter'

'Relentless Search for Food in Winter'

'Cold and frosty night, Barn Owl swoops down upon prey, Survival instinct'    #haiku poem Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Flying Barn Owl in the Setting Sun'

'Flying Barn Owl in the Setting Sun'

The silent flight of the hunter Barn Owl as it glides through the woods. Quite masterful! Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Barn Owl Watching'

'Barn Owl Watching'

Such keen eyes, watching and waiting. No need to expend energy wastefully, but to wait and consider. Very wise! Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Rustling Feathers'

'Rustling Feathers'

Swans look graceful when they glide across the glistening surface of water. However, their physique is very powerful and they can appear quite threatening when they become flustered. Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Flight of the Bumble Bee'

'Flight of the Bumble Bee'

Often overlooked and sometimes feared, these busy, hard workers have perfectly evolved to pollinate flowers, as they gather nectar to take back to their hives. My thanks to the humble bees. Watercolour painting by Janice Lyall

'The Colours of Summer'

'The Colours of Summer'

Reds, yellows, heavy blues separated between luscious, iridescent greens. One way to make a great stement to get noticed. Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Binky'

'Binky'

Such a gentle pony waiting to be stroked and rewarded with a crunchy carrot. Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Tawny Owl at Home'

'Tawny Owl at Home'

The wise, old owls choose their homes carefully, selecting decor to match their rich plummage. Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Swallow's Nest'

'Swallow's Nest'

Swallows spend most of their lives in the air and rarely land once they have left their nest. I get excited when I spot the first ones arriving with the warmer weather. Watercolour painting by Janice Lyall

'Flight Patterns Early Evening'

'Flight Patterns Early Evening'

Not just a chaotic mass of starlings getting ready to roost. The more I studied them, I began to realise that most birds were actually following in smaller family chains, making up the whole. Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Leaping Salmon'

'Leaping Salmon'

'Leaping Salmon race, Against crashing waterfalls, Life force, survival' #Haiku poem Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Swooping Gulls'

'Swooping Gulls'

Constant motion of the gulls gliding, rising then dipping into waves that swell and crash against well worn rocks. Uplifting and energising, Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Peregrine Raptor'

'Peregrine Raptor'

The circle of life, as the raptor takes food for its young. It has evolved to become effective in delivering its quarry. Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Covering of White'

'Covering of White'

The excitement mounts as watchers at WWT Slimbridge count in Bewick swans from their long flights to winter around the Severn Estuary. Each swan is identified by its bill and they often return to the exact spot around the lake. The winter feeding evening sessions are a spectacle not to be missed. The sounds become incredible as the man with the wheelbarrow enters their domain to begin their feed. Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Bewick Swans on the Frozen Lake'

'Bewick Swans on the Frozen Lake'

Bewick swans travel thousands of miles over many weeks to reach their UK wintering grounds. Many hazards face them and they rest their weary bodies for short periods, hoping to find food. Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Early Morning on the Lake'

'Early Morning on the Lake'

Imagine the wake up noise on the lake as the Bewicks prepare for the day. They keep checking to see if WWT 'Scott of the Marshes' is bringing food. Watercolour painting by Janice Lyall

'Flying Home'

'Flying Home'

Not a flying pterodactyl! Although.... Bewick swans travel thousands of miles to winter with us. WWT Slimbridge counts them in and out each year, recognising each one by its unique bill pattern. Evening winter feeding sessions are breath-taking to watch. Watercolour painting by Janice Lyall

'Snuggling Down'

'Snuggling Down'

Layers and layers of soft feathers protect the Bewick Swans from the freezing winds. Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Swan Lake'

'Swan Lake'

Swan Lake - the chorus are getting ready to dance - the anticipation and checking of costumes has begun. Watercolour painting by Janice Lyall

'Love on the Water'

'Love on the Water'

Swans seem the epitome of love and affection as they share their long partnership together. Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Visiting Sanderling'

'Visiting Sanderling'

We look forward to seeing our winter visitors and hope they leave us in the Spring, happy, healthy and well fed. Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'The Robin Trills'

'The Robin Trills'

Robins sing so loudly and tunefully for such small birds. They adore left over Christmas pudding. Watercolour painting by Janice Lyall

'Cockerel'

'Cockerel'

More effective than any alarm clock, although not quite so easy to adjust the wake-up time! The colourful, long feathers lend themselves very well to this dribbly, watercolour technique. No need for precision as the ruffled feathers stick out in all directions as they strut past. Watercolour painting by Janice Lyall

'Eyes Wide Open Short Eared Owl'

'Eyes Wide Open Short Eared Owl'

Always alert! Not quite to dependent on its hearing, but doesnt intend to miss anything. Mixed media painting by Janice Lyall

'March Hare'

'March Hare'

March and Hares just seem to go together. Each time I see them running across fields, I never cease to notice their long legs and ears. So very different from their rabbit cousins. Watercolour painting by Janice Lyall

'Lion Birdwatching'

'Lion Birdwatching'

'What do lions do, When satisfied with meals, Of previous hunts?' #haiku poem Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Water Vole at Lunch'

'Water Vole at Lunch'

One of the many benefits of canal restoration is that it provides vital habitats for some of our threatened wildlife, such as the water vole. Who has fond childhood memories of 'Tales of the Riverbank'? Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Nestled under a Bed of Leaves'

'Nestled under a Bed of Leaves'

In Autumn, I always gather up plenty of leaves and pile them into heaps under the bushes and behind any pots. It is so exciting to see a family of hedgehogs in the garden late at night when I dash out to bring in the washing. Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Asleep at Last'

'Asleep at Last'

Autumn days are filled with activity for mice who spend their time gathering food for their larders and their tummies. They scurry around the undergrowth in hedgerows and scamper along overhanging branches to reach the choicest grain. At last then the work is done and they have had their fill, its time to curl up for sleep. Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'Squirrel at Lunch'

'Squirrel at Lunch'

I generally see squirrels in my garden hanging upside down attacking the nut feeders. This one seems to be having quite a relaxed lunch. Watercolour painting by Janice Lyall

'The Berry Pickers'

'The Berry Pickers'

When berries are ripe, it doesn't take long for them to be stripped from the bushes and trees by the local bird population and those rare species visiting just for the treat. Not the best time to hang out the washing! Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

'The Gatherers at Crow's Nest'

'The Gatherers at Crow's Nest'

There is something mysterious about the watchfulness of crows. Unlike some flocks, individual crows look out in separate directions, scanning the landscape, building up a detailed map of movement. Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall
